Contentment in Peace

Do you want to be content? Contentment literally means “to be held together.” Amidst trying circumstances, we attempt to hold it all together, but we can’t accomplish this alone.

God created the desire for contentment by blessing man to be fruitful, to increase, to fill the earth, and to subdue it (Genesis 1:28). Subdue means “to bring contentment, or peace, to the earth.” Unfortunately, we seek contentment apart from God and become discontent. Whether we search for contentment in a new car, a new house, or even a new spouse, our thirsty hearts remain dissatisfied and unrestored.

However, wisdom, God’s heart intersecting with street smarts, satisfies our desire for contentment in peace. Solomon advised young leaders about this: “Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace” (Proverbs 3:17). He went on to say that humility toward the Restorer renews contentment: “The fear of the Lord leads to life: Then one rests content, untouched by trouble” (Proverbs 19:23).

Jesus Christ is the peace of God (Ephesians 2:14). He made two one, by reconciling man with God and man with man. His wisdom brings us peace, as He holds our lives together, filling us full in every way (Ephesians 1:23).

Today, surrender any search for contentment apart from God to Him. He will make you new again.
