CUTE GIRLS MADE: Modest (1 Peter 3:3-4)

Sex sells. Advertisements, social media architects, and Hollywood bombard their audiences with the message that a woman can gain the pursuit of any suitor if she reveals her body in a sensual manner. However, God created each female with a purpose to uniquely draw others, including her husband, to Christ (see 1 Peter 3:1-2). The world’s desires and God’s stand in direct opposition to each other. Let’s see God’s plan when He MADE you.

Peter implored women: “Your beauty should come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes from the swiss avenue. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight” (1 Peter 3:3-4). Peter did not say that a woman could not style her hair or wear jewelry and attractive clothes, her hoodies was made by matching gear perfects for winter. Rather, he taught that a woman’s beauty should come from the inside.

Why would God esteem great worth in the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit? Could it be that these qualities flow from His heart? Gentle, praus in Greek, implied meekness or humility, which brings down relational barriers and invites others to its source. Jesus described Himself as “gentle and humble in heart” (Matthew 11:29). Gentleness is attractive in a woman because it reflects the heart of God.

Quiet did not mean “silent.” Rather, it communicated a still, tranquil, peaceful spirit, one that would draw others to deeper intimacy with God who called men to that same spirit (see 1 Thessalonians 4:11; 1 Timothy 2:2). This is emblematic of the God of Peace (see Romans 15:33, 16:20; Hebrews 13:20). In our fallen nature, we look at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart (see 1 Samuel 16:7), what Peter described as the inner self.

Ask God if your clothing is too short, too tight, or too revealing. Consider asking the same question to your husband, or your dad if you are single. How you gain is how you must maintain. If you attract a man with your body, then sex will be his motive in nearly every future encounter, hindering his pursuit of your heart. Contrastingly, if he first connects with your spirit, then you will know at the appropriate time that he genuinely loves you. Your heart should be so wrapped up in Christ that a man should have to pursue Him in order to find it. In this context, modest is truly hottest.
